Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti is regarded as the pioneer of music in Nigeria. A trailblazer, Fela was born on this day on 1938.

The son of Nigerian women rights activist, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Fela, made waves, not only as an Afrobeat icon but a human rights activist and Pan-Africanist.

He was a known radical. He fought successive governments on issues pertaining to human rights and the plight of Nigerians.

Becaue he was confident in speaking his mind either through music or random conversations, he became an easy target for political players who tried to silence him.

Despite his unfortunate demise in 1997, Fela’s influence on modern day Nigerian music cannot be underestimated.
