The director of a popular fairytale cartoon 'Shrek 2', Kelly Absury, has died at the age of 60 after a battle with cancer.

The two-time Oscar-nominated director, who also worked on Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, passed away at his home in LA yesterday.

His agent Nancy Newhouse Porter told Deadline: "He was one of the most admired and beloved people in the industry."

Absury's work on Shrek 2 led to an Oscar nomination and the blockbuster raked in $919.8 million.

He also directed and co-wrote animated comedy Gnomeo & Juliet in 2011 and even provided some of the voices.

In 2012 and 2013 he worked with Disney on the storyboards for Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen.

The talented Absury also wrote and illustrated 12 children's books - including Rusty's Red Vacation, Bonnie's Blue House and Yolanda's Yellow School.

He also directed Smurfs: The Lost Village in 2017 and UglyDolls last year.

Asbury began his career at Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1983 and was credited for notable contributions to storyboards for popular films The Black Cauldron (1985), The Little Mermaid (1989), Rescuers Down Under (1990) and Beauty And The Beast (1991).

He also worked as the story artist on Pixar classic Toy Story in 1995 before moving to DreamWorks later that year.
