Former Senator Representing Kaduna State, Shehu Sani has slammed the strategy employed by Northern Governors towards solving the problem of almajiri (children beggars) in their region.

With COVID-19 fast spreading in Nigeria, measures are currently being put in place to get the almajiri off the streets.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State yesterday announced that almajiri in the state will be deported to their state of origin. He also pointed out that those whose state of origin is Kano will be enrolled in boarding schools in the state to keep them off the streets.

In reaction to the strategy by the Northern Governor, Shehu Sani stated that it is equivalent to ‘hiding their dirty clothes instead of cleaning them'.

He tweeted: "The Northern Governors strategy for solving the Almajiri problem is that of ‘hiding their dirty clothes instead of cleaning them'.

"When you arrest the dirty and beggarly Almajiri from your Beautiful Cities and ‘deport’ him to his village, away from your tourists, your visitors, your leisure and your sights, you are only hiding your dirty undies instead of cleaning them.

"The Almajiri you choose to ‘deport’ to the villages and refused to educate and integrate, will return to you as Bandits or Insurgents".
