Serve With Skirts Movement protest against NYSC, demand inclusion of skirts in NYSC uniform

NYSC members on skirt protesting NYSC members on skirt protesting

Serve With Skirts Movement, an advocacy group, has demanded that authorities of the National Youth Service Corp, NYSC, allow the use of skirts as part of the uniform for female Corp members.

A protest staged by the group yesterday saw the gathering of young men and women with placards saying “there is a difference between the world and the daughters of God” and “our sisters cannot dress like men."

The women in the protest who were dressed in NYSC uniforms wore skirts instead of the stipulated khaki pants.

The leader of the group, Udochi Emmanuel, told newsmen that the refusal to allow female Corp members wear skirts goes against their fundamental human rights under Section 38(1) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

She added that wearing of trousers has led to the increase of immorality at NYSC orientation camps.

“We had our mothers wearing skirts and we want to go back to that.

“We have asked for exemption (sic) severally. NYSC has not given that as an option, they have made it a compulsory one-year service for everyone below the age of 30 and they are mandated to wear those clothes.

“We have already started negotiations (with government) and we hope that from this dialogue we will get a favourable response.”

On if they don't get what they are demanding for, she disclosed that they will seek redress in court.
