Staff and students of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) have been confirmed positive of coronavirus.

This was revealed after three students fell ill and tested positive for the virus.

The incident has, however, prompted the authorities of the school to shut down the campus for a period of two weeks.

In a statement released by the student union of the institution, provost of the college directed all personnel to vacate the campus effective today Friday, January 15, 2021.

“Owing to the present reality of the Covid-19 we are faced with and after an evidence-based investigation that some students and College staff have been confirmed positive of the coronavirus, the Provost has mandated that EVERY student should evacuate the hostel and isolate themselves at home for the next 2weeks effective from Friday 15th January. This was a decision made at an emergency academic board meeting."

The Provost urged students with serious or mild symptoms of the virus to fill a form which would be sent across board and concerned persons shall be called upon for testing tomorrow Saturday, January 16, whilst they await the results at their various homes.

The Provost also stated that the college isolation bay will be set up during these 2 weeks of isolation.

"We strongly encourage everyone to STRICTLY adhere to the Covid-19 guidelines as stated by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control in a bid to help mitigate the spread and impact of the deadly virus within and beyond the college arena,” the statement reads.

So far, Lagos state coronavirus confirmed cases stands at 37, 852.
