Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has said there is immediate need for state and community police apparatus across Nigeria.

Abiodun spoke on Tuesday at a stakeholders’ meeting on EndSARS protest in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that present at the meeting were students’ union representatives, religious leaders, traditional rulers and transportation unions, among others.

The governor noted that community police would bring policing closer to the people and protect lives and property.

He said the relative peace in the state in the wake of #EndSARS protests had been largely through divine benevolence and effective engagement of the stakeholders and “local policing” by youths and traditional rulers.

Abiodun said the singular action validated the call for police officers that are sourced from and live within their communities.

The governor hailed security agencies for their professionalism, restraints and maturity in handling the protests in the state.

He added that it was a most challenging period to be a security agent, yet they rose to the occasion.
